ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Thousands of passengers were forced to evacuate Detroit Metropolitan Airport's North Terminal after a suspicious item set off an emergency Monday morning.

Around 6:15 a.m., TSA agents noticed on X-ray what appeared to be an explosive inside someone's carry-on luggage.  Passengers waiting were told to exit.

"They said, 'Everybody please leave... the building," explained Keith Bowles.

Many dressed for warmer destinations huddled in the cold as they waited to hear what happened.

"Little kids with just real light things on, and for awhile we were all huddled to kind of keep each other warm," said Chris Kuhl.

Passengers were taken to the Smith Terminal for their safety.  Two bomb squads were called to the scene, and the suspicious item was taken away allowing the terminal to reopen by 8:15 a.m.

There were delays and long lines in the aftermath of the scare, making the day after Easter look more like the day after Thanksgiving.

Fox 2 has learned the item was either a lamp or a toy that had both sand and water inside with a wire wrapped around it and was not explosive.
