Romulus mayor says he's not stepping down in statement

A political battle is heating up in Romulus.  The mayor is refusing to step down as he is being investigated for possible corruption and because of that, other officials have quit.

Monday's Romulus City Council meeting was packed, but the mayor's fans were few.  The calls for Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert to resign are getting louder.

Michigan State Police searched Lambert's home last week as part of a hush-hush investigation of public corruption inside Romulus.  It is yet another blow to a city that has been embarrassed by corruption, indictments and arrests.

"It is mine and many others in the community's belief that it would be in the best interest of our community if the mayor stepped down from his office," said Councilwoman Eva Webb.

The city's police chief resigned because the mayor would not.  The economic development director also resigned.

"It's just hard for me to accept the fact that there is not some fire where there is smoke," said former political consultant Robert McLachlan.  "I think he should immediately, at the very least, take a leave of absence, and I've said that from day one."

The mayor was not at the meeting and someone else read his statement, and it is clear he is not going anywhere, at least not right now.

"I cannot properly respond to the questions you have without knowing what the allegations are against me.  If and when I feel I should step down, I will.  Until then, my intention is to continue to serve as mayor," the statement said.

"If this is our mayor's position, then Mr. Mayor come to work.  If he chooses not to do so, let our community move forward," a resident said.
