A burglar who was shot five times by a Loganville mother will spend the next 10 years in jail, but not before he pleaded for mercy.
A Walton County judge sentenced Paul Ali Slater to 20 years -- with 10 to serve -- for the home invasion back in January. The judge said the presence of the mother and her children was a factor in the sentence.
Prosecutors say Slater pursued a mother and her two children through the house, but Slater told the judge he never intended to harm anyone. He said that his intent was to steal jewelry in order to pay bills. He said he broke in at a time when no one would be there.
Slater told the judge he has six kids.
Prosecutors say he also has a long arrest record.
After being shot by the mother, Slater spent a month in the hospital. He said that he still has limited use of one hand.
