Lake County detention deputy arrested for battering inmate
TAVARES, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Detectives with the Lake County Sheriff's Office have arrested a detention center deputy following an investigation into allegations that the officer battered an inmate who was in his custody.
An investigation was launched last week after an employee in the jail overheard inmates talking about an altercation between another inmate and Deputy Glenn Routhier. It was alleged that Routhier had repeatedly slammed the inmate into a wall and a glass window.
Detectives said they interviewed the victim and several witnesses, who provided consistent accounts of the incident. Detectives also interviewed Routhier, whom they say admitted to losing control and using too much force.
The case was referred to the State Attorney's Office on Monday and Routhier turned himself in to detectives at the jail around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Routhier has been employed by the Lake County Sheriff's Office since April 2005. He was suspended during the investigation, and is currently still on suspension as the disciplinary process is underway.
