FARIBAULT, Minn. (KMSP) -
The sexual abuse case against a former Shattuck St. Mary's dorm parent was dismissed Wednesday on a technicality.
Joseph Carl Machlitt, 63, was charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of attempted criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree.
Machlitt was arrested last November and admitted to having a sexual relationship with a Shattuck student while serving as a dorm parent in the summer of 1980. The allegations were brought by a 46-year-old man who came to police after seeing news reports and Facebook posts on the sexual abuse charges against former Shattuck teacher Lynn Seibel.
When interviewed by police, Machlitt admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim, who was 14 at the time.
But those charges are now dismissed, as the statute of limitations has expired and the charges don't qualify for an extension.
