Maine man pleads guilty in death of Florida firefighter
BELFAST, Maine (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -- A Maine man has pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge stemming from the death of a Florida firefighter.
Daniel Porter, 24, is accused of fatally shooting Jerry Perdomo in February of last year. Perdomo, 31, was a firefighter with the Seminole County Fire Department.
Porter appeared in a Maine courtroom on Wednesday afternoon to change his plea; he had originally pleaded not guilty, but his attorney said taking the plea was the best option for his client.
"The offer that the state made is likely where the jury may have ended
up, and so it made sense for him to choose to avoid a trial and putting
everyone through that process including himself," said attorney Jeffrey Silverstein.
Perdomo's body was found in a wooded area near the Maine town of Newburgh after he had been reported missing for several days. Investigators have said that they believe the death was drug-related. Porter claims the killing was in self defense.
Sentencing is set for April 22 at the Waldo County Courthouse, in Belfast, Maine.
