Upper Darby Twp., PA -

Since Anthony Radico was a kid, he dreamed of becoming a police officer, serving and protecting his community. But on February 24, while working out at Planet Fitness in Clifton Heights, the tables turned.

A civilian--Amanda Beal, a 23-year-old graduate student at Thomas Jefferson University, helped save the Radnor police officer's life.

"It's kind of surreal to be honest," exclaimed Beal. "I never in a million years thought I'd have to use CPR."

"Multiple doctors and nurses, everyone has said if not for Amanda I would not have had the chance for them to save me," said Radico.

The 43-year-old officer doesn't remember what happened. He was told he suffered cardiac arrest.

"I was on the treadmill walking and was going over to stretch. I wasn't feeling well. I sat down against the wall and apparently I started losing consciousness."

"I noticed he was breathing heavy and turning blue. So I called 911."

Putting her CPR certification to use, Beal says she continued to check Radico's pulse then gave him CPR for seven minutes until emergency crews arrived.

Beal's heroics were recognized Wednesday night with a hug from Radico and a commendation from Upper Darby Township Council.

Officer Radico is thankful to Beal for the second shot at life she helped give him.

"Everything is a little different. You're grateful just to wake up."
