Detectives search Amber alert family’s truck

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The GMC pickup truck belonging to the Hakken family has been found in the John's Pass parking garage in Madeira Beach, the sheriff's office said.

The 2006 GMC pickup truck was found abandoned on the second floor of the garage at 12901 Gulf Blvd.

Detectives and crime scene technicians searched the vehicle for any clues to the family's whereabouts Friday morning. Then the truck was towed away from the garage.

There is still no word on the family's location.

Earlier, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they had a report the truck was seen in the southeastern Tennessee area. An Amber alert was issued, but it was canceled Friday after officials found the truck in the Bay area.

Authorities say they are getting several different tips from around the country, searching for the couple who they say kidnapped their own children early Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Joshua Hakken kidnapped Cole and Chase Hakken around 6 a.m. after tying up their grandmother in her house. Joshua's wife, Sharyn, was also involved in the kidnapping, deputies say.

Thursday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released a portion of the 911 call the children's grandmother made shortly after the kidnapping.

In the 911 call, Patricia Houser tells the dispatcher she was calling about 30 minutes after Joshua Hakken tied her up and took the children.

"My son-in-law just kidnapped my two grandchildren," she tells the dispatcher. "He tied me up."

Houser tells the dispatcher the kids are in "state custody" and that Joshua Hakken is "not supposed to be near them."

Houser says she was able to free herself with a pair of scissors, but that Hakken and the kids had been gone about a half-hour. The audio then cuts off. Deputies said Hakken was armed when he took the children.

Houser had just been given permanent custody by Louisiana's Department of Children and Family Services.

The state initially issued a missing child alert, then upgraded it to an Amber alert. Georgia authorities issued a "Levi's Call" -- that state's version of an Amber alert -- for people there to be on the lookout for the family.

The county is now working with several states to gather more information.

"I need you all to understand this is a very fluid investigation," Colonel Donna Lusczynski said at a press conference Thursday.

So fluid that just moments before the grandmother was set to speak at a media briefing in the afternoon, she canceled.

"At this point, the family is going through an emotional situation … They just felt after discussions with us that it wasn't best at this time," Lusczynski explained.

Detectives are working with the FBI to determine the connection the family has to Louisiana. However, they did say Joshua Hakken was arrested in St. Tammany Parrish, Louisiana, on multiple drug charges after attending some sort of "anti-government rally."

When questioned about the extent of that rally, the sheriff's office declined to elaborate.

"We still have unanswered questions from the events in Louisiana prior to today's events here in Hillsborough County," a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office release stated Wednesday. "We are working closely with the FBI and government officials in the state of Louisiana to attempt to obtain a better picture of the history of this family and the circumstances which lead to the removal of the children from their parent custody and ultimately the terminations of all parental rights."

Deputies say they the couple should be considered armed and dangerous. It's unclear at this point what vehicle they may be in.

The boys are 2 and 4 years old. Chase is 3 feet tall and 33 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Cole is 3-foot-9 and 44 bounds. He also has brown hair and brown eyes.

Deputies say Joshua Hakken is officially wanted on the following counts:

• Kidnapping - 2 counts

• Interference in Child Custody - 2 counts

• Child Neglect - 2 counts

• False Imprisonment -1 count

• Burglary with a Battery - 1 count

• Grand Theft Auto - 1 count
