2013 spring training attendance breaks records

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

It was record year for spring training in Arizona. More than 1.7 million fans attended games this year -- that's up by about 20,000 over last year.

The numbers would have been even higher, but there was a weekend when several games were rained out.

Fans also set a single-game attendance record at the March 23 Dodgers-White Sox game at Camelback Ranch.

Next year the numbers are sure to be even higher. The new Chicago Cubs spring training ballpark opens at "Wrigleyville West," located at the intersect of Loop 101 and 202.

"Fans get excited about new ballparks no matter who is playing there. The League is still benefiting from the bounce we experienced in 2011 when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies opened their new ballpark at Salt River Fields," said Mark Coronado, President of the Cactus League Association.

"I expect the Cubs will fill their new ballpark next year, as well as others around the area, when Chicago faithful flock to Arizona in hopes of catching a game at the new venue."
