Neighborhood Lift program provides assistance for Atlanta homebuyers

Saving money to buy a home can be a daunting task, particularly in this economy. But, a national program is giving homebuyers the cash they need to call the city of Atlanta home.

Southwest Atlanta resident Kingdra Brandon is proud of her home.

"I always wanted to own a home," said Brandon.

Just over a year ago, Brandon was living in her mother's house, just dreaming of having her own.

"It was pretty difficult. It was a lot of obstacles in my way. As far as getting the money for the down payment, I has some credit issues, and then being a single parent trying to save money, in itself is kind of hard," Brandon said.

Now the three bedroom, two-bath house is all hers thanks to a national program called Neighborhood Lift.

"Neighborhood Lift will provide up to $15,000 in down payment assistance for homebuyers. You do not have to be a first time home buyer. You just can't own a home on the day you buy your new home," said Tia McCoy with Resources for Residents and Communities.

The money is a forgivable loan. It helps with down payment and closing costs used to purchase a condo, town home, single family home, even a duplex, as long as it's owner occupied and within the city of Atlanta. The money can also be used to help with remodel costs.

"As you may be aware, there are a lot of foreclosed homes in the market and some of them need a little work. And sometime families may not have that added resource to do the work. It could be change out the carpet, redo the kitchen, change out the appliances," McCoy said.

Brandon's home didn't need any work, and it's one of the reasons why she chose it and now calls it home.

There are income requirements depending on the size of your household. There's also a $1000 fee that can come from the buyer or the seller. So far, 160 homes have closed and they have funds for about 200 more. For more information on the program, click here!
