WINTER PARK, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A Winter Park police officer retired Thursday to avoid getting fired after an investigation found he made a derogatory racial comment about African-Americans, police said.

Lt. Ron Johnson, a 27-year veteran of the department, said, "That's why they should be drowned at birth," an apparent racial reference, at a staff meeting during a conversation about the one-year anniversary of the Trayvon Martin shooting, Winter Park Police said.
