Spring Warmth Arrives In Time For Phillies' Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA -

It's the day a whole city's been waiting for – the boys of summer are back in the City of Brotherly Love!

Excitement was in the air Friday in South Philly as thousands of fans packed into Citizens Bank Park for the 4:05 p.m. home opener against the Kansas City Royals.

The game sure did feel a lot better after pitcher Cliff Lee's masterpiece Thursday night, when he shut out the Atlanta Braves to brought the Phillies home with their first win of the season – and maybe a little bit of life.

Before the game, there were some special events and annual rituals.

The team held its regular blessing of the balls at the ballpark. Then, closer to game time, a Frog-Ex Parachute Team made their way down to the field.

The Philadelphia Boys Choir and Men's Chorale sand "America the Beautiful," there were player introductions with the team walking in from center field, and the National Anthem was sung by Ta'Rea Campbell, a Philadelphian from West Oak Lane, who is starring in Sister Act at the Academy of Music.

If you're heading to any of the games this weekend, SEPTA is running extra trains on the Broad Street Line.

The home opener comes amid a report that taking part in America's past-time can be expensive for a family of four. According to a marketing company's survey, the Phillies have the fourth most expensive ballpark in baseball.

Taking tickets, food, drinks, parking and souvenirs into consideration, it'll cost a family of four 257 dollars to go to a game.

Only the Red Sox, Yankees and Cubs are more expensive.

Few fans were complaining Friday, though, as they soaked in the sunshine and enjoyed the return of regular season baseball.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon filed this report from outside the ballpark Friday afternoon.
