Thousands attend Pride Parade as Supreme Court considers gay marriage

PHOENIX -

Thousands of people lined the streets of downtown Phoenix Saturday for the annual Pride Parade.

But this year was different for many people in the crowd, as they wait anxiously to hear what the Supreme Court will decide when it comes to gay marriage.

A crowd estimated at 10,000 people spent their sunny Saturday morning watching the Phoenix Pride Parade make its way up 3rd Street in central Phoenix.

For many in the crowd, it wasn't just about supporting equality.

Lorena Barnett and partner Erica Noel are hoping the Supreme Court will grant them the benefits of marriage.

"I'm pretty anxious. I really want to get married, we've talked about it a lot. Her family is from New Jersey so we could go there and do it but we really want to be able do it in our state - we love Arizona and want to stay," said Barnett.

"Because Lorena gave birth to Sawyer, I have absolutely no rights to her whatsoever and there's no way for me to get any rights to her in the state of Arizona. We love it here and we don't want to have to move to be able to have a family and have what everybody else has," said Noel.

Dwayne Stone and Joe Della Rocca were also watching the parade Saturday; they've been together for 31 years.

"When we were younger, it wasn't that big of a deal, but the older we get we realize the more important it's going to be as far as health and benefits," said Stone.

"All I care about is that the benefits that are offered to the heterosexual married couples would be offered to us, whether it's an actual marriage or a civil union," said Della Rocca.

The parade also included groups from major businesses like Starbucks and Wells Fargo and an entry from MCSO and Mesa Police.

Stone says it's a much bigger parade than it used to be.

"We still gotta long way to go but we're getting there," said Stone.
