PHILADELPHIA -

Hundreds gathered along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia Sunday to honor the more than 6 million Jewish men, women and children who died during the Holocaust.

The program, which is called Yom Hashoah, was part of the annual memorial ceremony, organized by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

This year's theme, "I don't live in the past, but the past lives on in me," echoed the message from event organizers, who said the best way to ensure a peaceful future is to learn from our past.

The event comes on the heals of a new bill that would require all Pennsylvania public and private schools teach students about the Holocaust and Genocide education.
