CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

He is accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend, injuring an officer and running from police.  Now 23-year-old Jonathan Elbers is locked up on $2 million bond.

Elbers rubbed his face and fidgeted in his seat during a video arraignment where he learned he could face life in prison for assault with intent to murder and other charges.

Last Friday, Police say Elbers broke into a house on Nicolette, attacked his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend and tried to choke her and stuff her into a Christmas tree bag because he was upset over their break-up.

"She had an opportunity, and he turned his back," said Detective Brian Chadwick with Chesterfield Police.  "She ended up hitting him with a piece of pottery and gave him a pretty good injury, and it probably bought her some time."

Police say the young woman likely saved her own life when she hit Elbers over the head.

Police got a 911 call from family members and arrived while Elbers was still in the house, but he struggled with an officer and got away.

Police surrounded the neighborhood searching for Elbers for two days in a wooded area along I-94.

Police say Elbers was hiding out in an unoccupied house on 25 Mile Road.

"Just busted the lock up, and when I came in the back door I was cussing," explained Bill Dod.  "I told him I was going to peel his face off."

Dod said Elbers bolted out the front door when he came to check on the house Sunday, and it was obvious where the suspect slept, washed up and changed his clothes, stealing some soccer jerseys.

"Stayed here for a while until my husband came in and started yelling," said Loann Dod.

In the end police caught Elbers cold and tired up in a tree hiding in a deer blind nearby.

Elbers told the judge he is trying to get his mother to get him an attorney.
