Beekeeper makes sweet honey in Douglas County

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

It's allergy season and  pollen is everywhere. Many people swear by local honey as a way to combat the itchy eyes and runny noses. So, how exactly is local honey made?

Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken put on a beekeeping suit and traveled to Sweetwater Creek Honey Farm to find out.

Armed with smoke, duct tape and a bright yellow veil, Allen Bradd is heading to battle.

"Every now and again we might come across one that's a little aggressive," said Bradd.

He's talking about three million bees. They are not the enemy, they are his army. Bradd is a professional beekeeper.

"My dad started when I was real young -- about the first grade," said Bradd

You may have seen the family's Sweetwater Creek Honey in stores. They've made it in Douglas County for years, which is why Bradd is not afraid to go gloveless when it comes to taking care of his bees. Over the next month, Bradd's bees will take the nectar from wild blackberries to make wildflower honey in hives. Each frame is then removed, the honey processed, bottled and shipped to stores.

It's back-breaking work in extreme heat and with the loud, constant buzzing of the bees. The extreme conditions are the real enemy. But, Bradd says the battle is worth it when the end result is so sweet.
