New home builder offers floor plans for multi-generational households

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The struggling U.S. economy and rise in home foreclosures are not only changing American households, they're changing new homes as well.

The number of multi-generational households has risen in recent years, with those with more than one adult generation hitting a record in 2008. So a new home developer is bringing two popular "home-within-a-home" floor plans to Florida.

Floor plans for Lennar's "NextGen" homes include two separate external doors -- one is an entry to the main section of the house, and a second door allows access to a one-bedroom, one-bath suite.

"We've seen a lot of interest for them. It's been very successful on the West Coast," said Jack Lazinsk, the vice president of sales and marketing at Lennar in Orlando.

The "Independence" floor plan includes four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a three-car garage plus a secondary living suite -- the "home-within-a-home." The suite includes an additional bedroom, bathroom, a small living area and kitchen with full fridge, stackable washer and dryer, dishwasher and microwave.

A door allows access -- or privacy -- between the suite and the main section of the home.

"They can be in their own space," Lazinsk said.

Lennar's multi-generational homes are available at their Calloway Bay at Wyndham Lakes community in Orange County.
