Protest held after Taylor Fitness USA becomes women only gym

TAYLOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

There was a protest Tuesday outside Fitness USA in Taylor after the health club closed its doors on men welcoming women only to that location.

"I think it's unfair that they're going to just kick the men out," said member Broderick Shreve.

In December, the Dearborn location also became women only, leaving the Lincoln Park facility as the only location that Fitness USA will open to men.

Even some women aren't happy with the company's decision.

"I don't agree with that.  I think that's discrimination against gender, and I'm here to rip up my card and no longer go to this gym," said Cindy Bernhardt.

"They told us we can use the Lincoln Park gym, which is not handicap accessible," said Daniel Pattenaude.  "It is very small, and you cannot fit there.  We want to just have it back to the way it was."

Pattenaude has been a member of Fitness USA for years, and two weeks ago, he was offered a lifetime membership and paid $600 for it.

"We all know that they knew that this was coming down the pipe two weeks ago when they were still handing out these lifetime memberships and charging members $600 for one.  They knew it at that time, and they still took our money," said member Andrew Sluka.

None of the members that we spoke with have been offered a refund on their recent memberships.

"Nothing in compensation, they have not offered it.  We are trying to negotiate with them," Pattenaude explained.

Fitness USA said anybody that has a complaint should feel free to write to them.  The address should be on your membership card.
