Crime Files: New details in Bulger trial, update on another 2010 murder trial

Posted: Updated:

FOX 25's Bob Ward opened his Crime Files on Thursday to share a timeline for the trial of James "Whitey" Bulger, as well as update a murder trial taking place in Salem Superior Court.

The Case Against James "Whitey" Bulger

Tuesday, June 4 to Wednesday, June 5: The jury selections process begins. A large pool of 250 potential jurors broken down into two groups of 125 will be considered. Only 12 jurors and up to six alternates will make the cut.

Monday, June 10: The trial begins at 9 a.m. with opening statements. The trial will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. One long day in court will be held on Thursday when testimony will wrap up at 3:30 p.m.

Bulger's family will have five seats in the court room and victims' families will have 20. The media will have 15 seats, but 48 outlets are seeking to cover the trial. The trial will be shown on close circuit feeds to overflow rooms for the media and the public.

The trial of James "Whitey" Bulger is expected to last until Labor Day or mid-September.

The Trial of Rafael Martinez

The trial of Rafael Martinez was suddenly halted on Thursday because Martinez was badly bruised in a fight with another inmate on Wednesday night. His lawyer is seeking the delay, saying he doesn't want the jury to see his client in that condition.

Martinez is accused of shooting 20-year-old Timothy Walker to death while he sat on is grandmother's porch in Lawrence in July 2010.

Last May, FOX 25's Bob Ward was the first to show surveillance footage on television that revealed a gunman walking toward the scene of a murder and then fleeing immediately after. Ward's New England's Unsolved story was shown to the jury this week. Prosecutors say Martinez admitted to his girlfriend and her mother that he was the man in the video after watching Ward's story with them.

The trial of Rafael Martinez resumes on Tuesday.
