SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Moms are full of useful advice. However, a new study says that reading in the dark -- something we were all warned against as kids -- doesn't necessarily hurt your eyes.

HealthWorks' Deena Centofanti wanted to find out what other parenting wisdom was wrong.

What about sitting too close to the TV? It seems like we all heard that if we did, we'd go blind.

"As a general rule, you're not going to harm your eyesight by using it," says Dr. Marcus DeGraw, a pediatrician at the St. John Children's Center in Grosse Pointe. "Whether you're sitting too close or in the dark, it doesn't hurt your eyes."

What about if you let your kids load up on sugar? Most moms will tell you it's like a power-booster. However, doctors say that eating sugar doesn't necessarily make kids hyper.

"No, absolutely not. That's been studied definitively, and lots of studies show sugar has nothing to do with hyperactivity," says Dr. DeGraw. "I kind of like that myth, though, because we want kids to eat less sugar and junk food anyway, so I don't mind that being put out there if kids will eat less of it."

What about going outside without a coat on? Your mom probably told you that you'd catch pneumonia or the flu. However, Dr. DeGraw says that going out in the cold without a coat or with wet hair doesn't make you sick.

"Absolutely not. Getting sick is pretty simple," he says. "You get sick by getting germs in or on you. And, classically, you're going to get those germs from other people. Rainy weather, going outside without a coat, going outside with wet hair has nothing to do with getting sick."

Of course, moms should know that even if they're not always right, we always remember their words of wisdom.
