It's Tax Day: How to file online for free

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

They say there are two things that are certain in life: Death and taxes.

And one of those is due today.

It's Tax Day, and if you haven't filed already, you need to start crunching those numbers. There's a good chance you can take care of this online for free. It covers about 70 percent of all taxpayers.

If your adjusted gross income, which is what you earned last year after any deductions, is $57,000 or less, you're good to go.

First, you need to go to To the right, you'll see a logo for a free file. It takes you to a page with instructions, offering a list of companies you can use.

You can also get your refund direct deposited to a bank account or pay online if you owe money, and if you decide you prefer to go the old fashioned route and drop your return in the mail, you can fill out the forms online and print them.

Just remember: returns need to be postmarked by midnight tonight. That's also the deadline to file an extension. But you still have to pay an estimate if you owe cash to Uncle Sam.

Of course, the IRS could come knocking for an audit on something you filed, but it's unlikely.

Last year, about 1 percent of all people had their returns audited. But for people making more than $200,000, that rate went up to 3.7 percent. Millionaires were even worse off. Last year, the IRS took a closer look at 12.1 percent of all returns for people in that bracket.

Last year, nearly 11 million people waited till Monday to file for a federal income tax extension.
