Medical director of TC Marathon: Finish line a soft target for numbers

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Although the medical director of the Twin Cities marathon says the scale between our local race and the Boston Marathon is vastly different, Dr. Bill Roberts told FOX 9 News he has reason to believe the target was planned.

"It's a pretty soft target if you're doing damage," Roberts said. "Finish line is the place to do it if you're going to try and get numbers."

Roberts has worked at the Boston Marathon before, and he has many friends and colleagues that were at the race when the explosions rocked the finish line shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday.

"They looked like reasonably powerful blasts," Roberts said. "People were blown up against the fencing, and that's pretty hard fencing there. The security fencing at the finish line is made to keep people out."

Roberts said race organizers frequently plan different kinds of disaster scenarios, including bomb detonations; however, he said he has no doubt Monday's incident will change the way large races handle security.

While Roberts said he is worried about the safety of his friends who were working at the race, it is sort of fortunate that there were so many medical personnel in the area because the injured were tended to immediately and supplies were present.
