Sanitation workers go on strike in McDonough

Posted: Updated:
MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

More than three dozen drivers and other employees at a waste management company in McDonough have begun a labor strike.

Employees of Republic Services began the strike on Monday, citing what they call unfair labor practices.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/106shs4) that the striking workers are members of the Teamsters Local Union 728 in Atlanta. Union representative Huey Vample, a Republic driver, said union members are being treated more harshly than non-union members on disciplinary actions by the company and pay. He said workers are not being paid for extra hours.

The newspaper reports that efforts to reach company representatives were unsuccessful.

Vample said workers in McDonough will remain on a picket line - and away from their residential and commercial routes garbage routes - until their demands are met.
