MARTA increasing security after Boston bombings

Posted: Updated:

Security is being beefed up in major U.S. cities after Monday's bombings during the Boston Marathon, and that includes Atlanta. MARTA is deploying K-9 units and increasing police presence at its stations.

Several officers tell FOX 5 that public transportation is viewed by law enforcement as a potential target for terrorists.

"MARTA has no credible threats at this time, but we definitely are in a heightened state of awareness," said MARTA Police Sgt. Aston Greene.

Greene says they are implementing a number of measures to increase security. In addition to deploying K-9 units, they are also putting special units on stand-by activation. They are placing all MARTA staff on heightened alert for any suspicious activity.

They are also asking the public to immediately alert them if they see anything suspicious.

Some riders say they thing the extra security is a good thing and that they feel pretty secure on MARTA.

The Hawks and Braves are playing in town on Tuesday night. Anyone going to the games can expect rigorous bag checks before entering the venues.
