The impact of the nation's sequestration cuts are beginning to show up in Southeast Michigan where the Detroit Medical Center is announcing it will begin laying off at least 300 staffers.
According to crainsdetroit.com, DMC's CEO Joe Mullany announced the cuts in an employee e-newsletter released today. "In corporate/administrative and selected hospital areas across the DMC that do not affect care, we are reducing and realigning staff levels by approximately a 2 percent FTE reduction or 300 employees," Mullany wrote.
The layoffs make the DMC the first hospital in Southeastern Michigan to announce cuts in preparation for millions of dollars in Medicare sequestration cuts.
Mullany added, "DMC needs to address the magnitude of these financial shortfalls this year and in the next several years, finding expense reductions equal to our anticipated revenue reductions."
These are not the only changes being made at the DMC which is in the process of restructuring that is required under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, crainsdetroit.com reported.
