DCF takes emergency custody of starving child

TAVARES, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The Florida Department of Children and Families has taken custody of an 11-year-old Lake County girl, after receiving a report alleging that the girl had been abused through starvation.

The child, who weighed approximately 40 pounds, remains hospitalized.  She was originally scheduled to be examined by DCF's Child Protection Team, but was transported for emergency medical care instead.

A DCF spokesperson said that doctors ruled out any eating disorders, which the father claimed was the reason for the girl's low weight.  Child protection officials visited with the girl over the weekend, describing her to be in good spirits and "very thankful."

Two other children lived in the home.  Authorities said they did not show any visible signs of abuse or neglect and remain with a relative at this time.

The case is being investigated by the Tavares Police Department.
