Chicago `unity run` honors Boston Marathon victims

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A large group gathered along the lakefront Tuesday evening to run in solidarity for the victims of the Boston tragedy and to send a message to the people behind the attacks.

"My oldest son about to turn 8, so I held both of my boys very tight this morning and just..they're my biggest fans," Wendy Jaehn says. "Had it not been on school day, they would have been out there cheering us on yesterday."

Wendy Jaehn had already finished running in the Boston Marathon and was at the airport when she learned of the deadly blasts from the TV news.

"I was in shock," Jaehn says of the news. "I was getting calls from people at first saying congratulations and then saying ‘are you okay?' and I'm like ‘what are you talking about?'"

Jaehn, the Executive Director of Chicago Area Runners Association or CARA, knew she had to do something when she arrived home. So, she organized a "unity run" and spread the word on social media.

Despite the intermittent rainfall, dozens came out to foster avenue beach at 6 o'clock to run in solidarity for the victims.

"I think it's important to show whoever did this, that they can't stop us," runner Michelle Brewster says. "And the most important thing we can do right now is to keep going, keep running, and show support as a running community."

"You see an event like this and it's easy to feel helpless and not know how to deal with the tragedy," says Jason Patera. "Doing something like this is a way to process it with like-minded people."

Jaehn says CARA's First Merit bank lakefront 10-mile race is still on for this Saturday and that interest in the race has spiked.

"We've had a lot of calls from runners and others saying, ‘is the race still going on? And ‘what are you doing in response?'" Jaehn says. "We have a security plan in place already but we're, increasing security presence."
