Colleen's Dream: Woman's battle with ovarian cancer serves as an inspiration to others

Ovarian cancer is one of the scariest illnesses a woman can be diagnosed with. While doctors know a lot about it, little is known about how to detect it early on to save a woman's life. A valley family started a foundation with the help of the National Football League to find a test to detect ovarian cancer. It all started with their mother's mission: Colleen's Dream. FOX 10's Syleste Rodriguez reports.

When you think of the Border Patrol in Arizona, you think of agents working in the hot and dusty desert. But there's a highly trained unit patrolling the Colorado River. The unit is based out of Yuma where the Colorado river separates Arizona, California, and Mexico.

PHOENIX -

A two pound tumor, the size of a honeydew melon, is removed from the abdomen of a valley girl. At just 9 years old, doctors tell her parents its Stage III cancer.

While they treat her, family and friends are turning to the power of prayer through social media.

Angelica Aguilera is only 9 years old. But her friends span the globe. Perfect strangers who are praying for her recovery.

"They said I had a mass and then they did a biopsy and they see that it was a solid tumor and they could get it out," says Angelica.

Dad Atari Aguilera says it started with stomach pains and a visit to the ER.

"They said what it does, it multiplies so you know once it got going, it just got bigger and bigger," says Atari.

The next day, March 17, doctors at Phoenix Children's Hospital removed a two pound tumor from Angelica's ovary -- a form of cancer called dysgerminoma that affects about 5% of kids.

"Hello Facebook friends and family I have a small favor to ask…"

It was around that time that Aguilera's cousin, David Cornejo, posted Angelica's story on Facebook -- a plea for prayers.

"My mom went to visit her and just said hang in there Angelica people are praying for you," says David. "I thought, you know, I can do something with this you know, let's really show her who is praying for her."

Angelica has to endure six rounds of chemotherapy. All of the treatment has to be administered here at Phoenix Children's Hospital. She just completed round two and will be back in three weeks for round three.

"I think that I am very brave and that I am going to kick this things butt," says Angelica.

To date Angelica has nearly 500,000 likes, and over a quarter million comments.

These prayers, she says, are helping her heal.

"Thank you and please continue praying."
