A southwest Atlanta couple is in the hospital after trying to stop three suspects from stealing their SUV early Wednesday morning.
Investigators say the couple was inside their home on Dawson Lane around 1:15 a.m. when the husband heard a commotion. They say he grabbed his gun, went outside, and found three people trying to steal their black SUV.
Atlanta police say he exchanged gunfire with the suspects, and was shot twice in the back. Investigators say his wife came outside armed with a baseball bat and tried to help. She was shot in the leg.
A neighbor told FOX 5 she heard the commotion, but wasn't sure where it was coming from. She said what she heard was definitely gunshots, and when she came out of her house, she saw paramedics taking someone away.
The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, said her home was burglarized last week when she was out of town. She said she thinks the suspects are casing out the neighborhood and while it's unnerving, she is not letting it scare her out of her home.
Other neighbors said they are tired of the crime in their neighborhood, and plan to meet on Thursday to figure out ways to combat it.
APD Captain Timothy Peek said it isn't worth putting yourself in a dangerous situation, and you should call 911.
The couple was taken to an area hospital, where they are both listed in stable condition. The three suspects remain on the loose.
