It's Not Easy Being Green

Lancaster, CA -

(FOX 11) Green. Eco-friendly. Sustainable. All buzz words yes, but certainly not a passing fad.

Green is here and businesses who aren't on board are falling behind.

Take what's happening in Lancaster where come May 1st the first Chinese-owned vehicle plant on American soil will open for business, manufacturing electric buses -- buses that according to the company, BYD, can travel 150 miles on a single charge.

The irony? BYD just bought 120,000 square foot plant from Rexhall Industries in Lancaster.

Rexhall builds RV's and the economic crisis the country has been in, coupled with high gas prices, have forced it to downsize to a plant a third of the size. This while they work on a greener motorhome.

No word on how far along they are in the going green process and while Rexhall's CEO will be working with BYD, it can't be easy to see times change.

On the bright side, the city of Lancaster is thrilled to seal the deal they've been working on since 2009 with BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams.

The plant will bring jobs, business opportunities and of course, tax revenues to a city struggling with an unemployment rate of over 14%.

It's not easy being green -- but green is here to stay.
