NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 20 points and reserve Andray Blatche added 15 as the playoff-bound Brooklyn Nets held off the Detroit Pistons 103-99 on Wednesday night.

Kris Humphries had 11 points and Joe Johnson added 10 for Brooklyn, winners of 2 straight. The Nets wrapped up their first regular season after leaving New Jersey and will open their first playoff series in six years at home against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.

The Bulls clinched the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference when Atlanta lost to the New York Knicks.

Will Bynum had 23 points for the Pistons, who snapped a 4-game winning streak. Andre Drummond scored 13 points and Greg Monroe added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Detroit will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season, totaling 201 losses in that stretch.

How Mets and Yankees can improve or contend in 2014

With the All-Star break over and the second half of the MLB season well underway, the New York Mets (46-52 as of July 20) and the New York Yankees (50-47 as of July 20) find themselves in the same situations each team is accustomed to at this time of the season. The Yankees are in the middle of the AL East Division title while the Mets are scrapping for every win possible to stay relevant in the NL East. But while the record says one thing, reality says another.

Maybe it's a thrilling chase on the base-paths or crack of a bat on a hot summer day. No matter why they love this game, for this collection of 11- and 12-year-old baseball players in Mount Vernon, N.Y., all the hard work on and off the field is paying off. These kids and their coaches will be playing a tournament during All-Star festivities in Minnesota as part of Major League Baseball's effort to revive baseball in inner cities.
