The mother of a 26-year-old father is grieving the loss of her son after he was shot and killed on West Kaley Street early Sunday morning.
Orange County Sheriff's detectives identified the victim as Dwayne Jones. His mother says he was a loving father who always put a smile on the face of everyone he came across.
"He was just the most cheerful person, and I love him. Everywhere he went, he always made people laugh," Mary Jones said.
Investigators spent most of the Sunday morning hours gathering and collecting evidence from 1221 West Kaley St., where Jones' body was found. Family members said he had just left a friend's house on his bike when he received a phone call.
"He rode his bike over, someone called him on the phone and he came over. And I guess when he knocked on the door -- bam -- they shot him," said Yolanda Jones, the victim's cousin.
Emotions ran high the moments after loved ones learned about his death. At one point, fights broke out right in the middle of Kaley. But as the morning progressed, the family came together to console one another with hugs of comfort.
They hope that justice is sought for the beloved father and son whose life ended too soon.
"The person who did that to my nephew, he needs to come forward and man up to what he did," the victim's aunt said. "If anybody knows anything, just come forward and tell. That's all. Just help us out," she said.
Orange County Sheriff's deputies are asking for the public's help with information on this shooting investigation. They are urging anyone with information to call their office or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
