South Side man charged with killing Wisconsin man in town for funeral

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A West Pullman teen has been charged with the slaying more than a year ago of a man outside a South Side nightclub.

Maurice Terrell, 19, of the 11800 block of S. Yale, has been charged with first-degree murder for the fatal March 2012 shooting of Quentin Johnson of Madison, Wis.

Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Melissa Samp said Johnson, 37, was sitting in the driver's seat of a car parked outside the nightclub in the 200 block of E. 55th Place on March 2, 2012, when someone walked over to talk to him.

Johnson was in town for a funeral, Samp told Cook County Judge James Brown during a hearing Sunday, and three people were in the car with him.

That's when Terrell, who also goes by "Pig" according to police reports, approached on foot and fired a gun 10 times into the car. Johnson was shot in the back, Samp said, and he died a short time later.

A few minutes later, Samp said police stopped a car with no lights on a few blocks away from the shooting. The prosecutor said Terrell was in the back of the car, and three people were in the car with him. However, she said Terrell was the nearest person to a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun found under the front passenger seat.

Its slide lock was out, Samp said, suggesting it had recently been fired, and a bullet recovered from Johnson's body matched the gun. Terrell was also the only person in the car to test positive for gunshot residue.

Samp said Terrell was arrested at the time but released without charges. Police reports show he was arrested again Friday. Judge Brown ordered him held without bail.
