A special ceremony was held on Sunday afternoon at the state Capitol -- and it was long overdue.
Sen. Al Franken pinned the Prisoner of War Service Medal on former Army Sgt. Duane Broten's chest -- an honor he earned 60 years ago.
"I would also like to present Duane and Monica a flag flown over the Capitol in your honor for your service," Franken said. "Thank you, Duane. Thank you, Monica."
Army records did not reflect that Broten was taken prisoner in Korea in 1953. Despite suffering multiple wounds, he was able to escape.
Broten and his wife spent 15 years working to correct his military record, and eventually reached out to Franken's office. Franken then worked with Army officials to set the record straight.
