Federal grant brings 39 new firefighters to Waterford Twp.

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Battling fires within township borders only no longer applies to Waterford firefighters. Their jurisdictions now covers Pontiac and Lake Angelus, an additional 130,000 people.

That's why a group of new recruits brought in as part of a $7.6 million federal grant means more boots on the ground starting next week. "Our fire trucks are typically manned by one person in Waterford," said Cpt. John Lyman. "Now, there will be four men versus one."

The Department of Homeland Security grant, applied for last summer, means 39 firefighters were added to the force, bringing their total up to 138 first responders ready to for whatever comes their way in the 60-square mile area they cover.

The grant money is expected to last for two years. After that, Lyman says the department will again apply for the money to try and keep the force's numbers on the higher end.
