Small Chicago company Timelines takes Facebook to court

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Facebook representatives appeared at Chicago's federal courthouse Monday morning, because they're being sued by a small local company Timelines.

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg calls the timeline the "heart of the experience," and began using the term in 2011.

The lawsuit was filed by Timelines, a small Chicago company, claiming trademark infringement. Timelines claims the social media giant knew the company registered a trademark on the term at the time of the Facebook concept's inception.

Most Facebook users perceive the term "timeline" to mean the layout of the page. The social media giant said the term is generic and cannot be owned. But Timelines.com is a website that encourages users to share and record history. It's different.

Timelines is a small company with about 1,000 users, started in 2009 – two years before Facebook's "timeline" was unveiled. The company said Facebook stole its identity and will swallow the company.
