Pima Elementary kids gain lesson in entrepreneurship

Posted: Updated:

It's never too young to become an entrepreneur. Some 4th graders from Pima Elementary are learning that lesson. They are starting their own businesses.

These 4th graders mean business. They are getting ready to open up lemonade stands in their Scottsdale neighborhoods.

"We're just kind of having fun, to become an entrepreneur," says student Kelly Blackledge.

They've been working on perfecting their lemonade, mixing and tasting. But Haley Hamnan has the secret.

"I think we are going to sell the most lemonade because ours is so sweet."

The Pima Elementary students have been working in groups of four on business plans.

The lemonade has to be good, but so do the signs, and the kids are out doing them themselves. The prices for the lemonade are 50 cents to a dollar.

Russ Perry and his partner Chris Tonzio came up with the idea of helping kids become entrepreneurs. They own a small business that helps adults start a business.

Russ says it's never too early to become an entrepreneur.

"What we are really trying to do is give them a spark, for them to think about what they are doing here and what they could do down the road," says Russ.

The principal is impressed. It's a great opportunity. But she is surprised at the kids that signed up for the program.

"We didn't expect so many kids to have an interest in it. we had over 40 kids in the club every week and they just loved coming and learning about business," says Principal Amy Uchacz.

They'll find out how successful they are on Thursday night when they open their lemonade stands.

Russ Perry is planning on expanding the young entrepreneur class to other schools in the valley.
