A Merritt Island man has died after being shot during an altercation with Brevard County deputies.
Witnesses say William Emanuel Poplos, 57, pointed a gun at the deputies, who then opened fire.
The deputies were responding to a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. Monday at 490 Belair Avenue. According to the caller, a resident had fired several rounds within the home. Deputies arrived at the scene and attempted to make contact with a man who was later identified as Poplos. They said was wielding a handgun and responded to what they perceived was a threat, firing at Poplos.
Poplos was transported to the Cape Canaveral Hospital Emergency Room in critical condition but later died from his wounds.
The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Services. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent and parallel investigation regarding the use of deadly force.
The deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
