Volunteers in Pontiac turn vacant lots into community gardens

PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

The city of Pontiac has two to brand new white pine trees. Residents planted one on N. Saginaw for Earth Day and to kick off community gardening season.

This mini-version of Michigan's state tree could grow to be more than 100 feet tall and live for more than 400 years.

"They clean up the air, they beautify the environment and it's really great on Earth Day to be putting in a tree for the future," said Michael Genovese.

During the tree planting, master gardener Bill Pioch was busy cleaning up what will soon be a thriving lot. It's cared for by neighbors and volunteers. On this Earth Day, Pioch says people are getting the message, but there's plenty of work to do.

"I think they're becoming more aware of all the greening endeavors going on around the country," said Pioch. "But there's still a lot of people that I don't think know what we can do to protect mother Earth."

A whole coalition is making these gardens possible, including the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Oakland County Farm Bureau and other organizations.

"A lot of people's hungry around here. Just stop by, grab a tomato or pepper or whatever, you know, it's a good idea," said neighbor James Stewart.

Soon this plot of land will be green and thriving with fresh food for anyone who needs it. With the right kind of care, the Earth will meet our needs, an important message for Earth Day.
