4-year-old boy left alone on bus for 2 hours

LAVEEN, Ariz. -

A Laveen mother is trying to figure out what happened after her 4-year-old special needs son was left alone on a bus by himself for almost two hours.

"I was just frantic." With good reason.

Jennifer Ponce's son, Floyd Jr., is a sweet 4-year-old with special needs. He's not able to speak. He goes to preschool at Laveen Elementary.

Floyd Jr.'s bus stop is right across the street from his house. He got on the bus Monday but he never got off.

Jennifer works, so her sister makes sure Floyd Jr. gets on the bus that takes him to afternoon school. Around 1 p.m., Jennifer got a call. Her son was absent.

"I just thought maybe my sister didn't take him to school. My next call was saying they found him on the bus. What's wrong, what are their steps to make sure all the kids get off the bus?"

Her son was on the bus alone for more than one hour. He was found sleeping on the seat in the bus yard, two miles from his school. No one checked the bus until later.

The Laveen School District calls it an unfortunate mistake.

"We are always concerned about our students in any such situation we are thoroughly investigating and proper action will be taken," says Karen Menge, Laveen School District.

But Jennifer is not sure she wants her special needs son going back to the school.

"I am just very concerned about my son's safety," says Jennifer.

Jennifer will be meeting with the Laveen School District on Wednesday. She is hoping to get some answers on how her son could have been left in a hot bus for more than an hour by himself.
