Woman who was bound and gagged escaped assailant with kick to the groin

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WOGX FOX 51) -

A University of Florida student was attacked at an off campus apartment complex in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, according to Gainesville police.

GPD spokesperson Officer Ben Tobias said the young woman had walked out to her car to get a book and some study materials when she was attacked.

"The subject reportedly grabbed her and placed what she believes to be handgun to her head, bound her hands and bound her mouth with a piece of a torn up shirt, and pushed her to the ground," said Officer Tobias.

According to investigators, the victim kicked her attacker in the groin, hurting and startling him, giving her a few seconds to get up and run to her apartment.  Police said her roommates then called 911 while they untied the ripped t-shirt that the suspect had tied around her mouth and hands.

As for the attackers intentions, Tobias said, "It's too early to know.  Luckily she was able to fight back before we were able to see what he was after."

News of this early morning attack came as a surprise to the victim's neighbors.

"I don't know what I'd do in that situation.  Oh my gosh!  That's a really terrifying thought to know someone was in this apartment complex late at night to harm someone," said Phuong Nguyen.

This is the second time in a week that a female student has been attacked off campus.  Last Monday a man broke into a home near 4th Avenue  and Southwest 10th.  Police said he sexually assaulted and robbed a student.

When asked if the attacks might be related, Tobias told us, "It's too coincidental that similar attacks would happen within a week of each other, but we don't have enough to connect it yet."

While police work to solve these crimes, officers ask that students do their part by being aware of their surroundings and traveling in pairs, especially at night.

Anyone who might have information about the attacks is asked to call the Gainesville Police Department at 352-334-2400.
