Man charged with shooting outside Wrigley Field

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 26-year-old South Side man currently on parole for making dozens of 911 calls -- reporting false rapes and talking lewdly to operators -- has been charged with shooting a man near Wrigley Field early Sunday, authorities said.

Marcus Harris, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street, whose distinctive facial tattoos -- including a teardrop, a cross, and a White Sox logo -- led to his arrest, was charged with aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, obstructing identification, and attempted armed robbery with a firearm. During a Tuesday bond court hearing, a Cook County judge set Harris bond at $900,000.

Contrary to earlier reports he shot a co-conspirator, Harris shot one of the two men he targeted outside a nightclub early Sunday, according to prosecutors. Harris knew both of the men, authorities said.

About 3:25 a.m., the alleged gunman walked up to the men in the 1000 block of West Addison Street, police said, in an apparent robbery attempt.

Harris said to one of the men, "What's up? I know you got some bread," Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during Harris' bond hearing on Tuesday.

When another man who was with the victim asked Harris what he was doing, Harris allegedly told him to mind his own business and opened fire.

The 25-year-old victim was shot in the back, Scaduto said. The victim, who police said has gang affiliations, was taken in serious condition to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he remains Tuesday.

Harris was arrested Monday in the Uptown neighborhood after police officers recognized him from the description -- including the facial tatoos -- given by the victim, Chicago Police said. He gave officers a false name of Emmanual King when he was arrested, according to the police report.

Harris is currently on parole for making more than 100 9-1-1 calls and reporting false rapes and speaking lewdly to operators, Scaduto said. He also has past robbery convictions and misdemeanor arrests for assault and battery.

The father of two is allegedly a member of a Gangster Disciple faction, according to police reports.
