Man charged in standoff involving 9-year-old child
PORT ORANGE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A Volusia County man is scheduled to face a judge Wednesday after authorities say he barricaded himself inside a home with a 9-year-old child inside.
Port Orange Police say Jamie R. Cook, 31, got into an argument Tuesday with his girlfriend, with whom he lives at the Sydney Street home. Her four children also live there.
Cook then called family members, saying he was going to hurt himself, police said. When officers arrived at the home, the girlfriend and two of her children were found, but the other two were still inside with Cook.
About a half-dozen homes in the area were evacuated as the incident escalated.
At about 5:30 p.m., one of the children walked out of the home unarmed. Three hours later, the 9-year-old was released and reunited with his mother. Shortly after, Cook came out of the home.
"I was relieved. I can't even explain it," said Roger Kolb, the boy's father. "I was happy that he's OK, that he's not hurt, that he's alive. I'm at a loss for words right now."
No one was hurt in the incident. Cook faces multiple charges, including false imprisonment and child endangerment, and taken to Volusia County Branch Jail on no bond. Additional charges may be added.
