Penn Relays Kicking Off With Tighter Security

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Thousands of track athletes from all over the country have converged on Philadelphia for the Penn Relays.

The annual event kicks off today. It's the nation's oldest and largest track meet, with 18,000 participants, and this year that means security is going to be even tighter following the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the three-day track and field competitions.

Backpacks will not be permitted inside Franklin Field this year.

That's just one of the security measures put in place in response to protect both spectators and athletes at the event after the Boston terror attack.

FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney is reporting live Thursday morning from Franklin Field and filed the above video report.
