Paved road to make travel smoother to Skywalk

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The rugged washboard road that leads tourists to the Grand Canyon Skywalk is getting paved.

The Hualapai Tribe has awarded a $25 million contract to a Prescott company to finish paving the last 9 miles of Diamond Bar Road.

Groundbreaking on the project is set for Monday. Come this time next year, the road will be much smoother and straighter.

The road with its dirt & gravel surface, sharp curves and hill crests twists along Joshua trees and dips into a local wash before taking tourists onto the Hualapai reservation.

Making the trip on the road has been the biggest drawback for some people headed to the Skywalk. For others, it's part of the experience.

Authorities say they're hopeful the new road will make the trip much safer.
