New Details Emerge On Security For Upcoming Broad Street Run

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

In less than one week, thousands of runners will hit the streets of Philadelphia for the Broad Street Run.

The Broad Street Run, which is the city's largest, takes place Sunday along a 10-mile stretch of Broad Street.

As many as 40,000 runners are expected to race, along with thousands of spectators who will be watching.

FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reports there are several new security measures in place for this year's event.

Among the additions, organizers say runners will use clear backpacks. The backpacks will be swept by bomb sniffing dogs and then driven by bus to the runners at the finish line.

Police will also remove trash cans or any other receptacle along the route to decrease the chance for any the type of device to be hidden.

FOX 29 has also learned that police have asked businesses and schools along the route to focus their surveillance cameras on the run to give police the opportunity to have an extra eye on everything.

Police may also use portable cameras of their own during the race.

As far as police presence, Dave Schratwieser reports there will be many plainclothes officers in addition to officers in uniform along the route and at the start and finish lines.
