Sox trade for Oakland outfielder Casper Wells

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Casper Wells from the Oakland A's in exchange for cash considerations.  To make room for Wells on the 40-man roster, the White Sox have returned left-handed pitcher Leyson Septimo from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and transferred him to the 60-day disabled list.

Wells, 28, began this season in the Seattle organization before being claimed off waivers by Toronto on April 10.  The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on April 15 and traded to the A's on April 22 in return for cash considerations.  He played in three games with Oakland, going 0-5, before being designated for assignment on April 28.

Wells, who will wear uniform No. 39 with the White Sox, is a career .244 (146-598) hitter with 25 home runs and 80 RBI in 244 games over four major-league seasons with Detroit (2010-11), Seattle (2011-12) and the A's (2013).  He has appeared in 112 games in right field, 83 in left and 24 in center.

Wells owns a lifetime .261 (73-280) average with a .345 on-base and .482 slugging percentage against left-handed pitchers, including a .267 mark (35-131) with seven home runs, 20 RBI, a .364 on-base and .527 slugging percentage with the Mariners in 2012.

He originally was selected by the Tigers in the 14th round of the 2005 draft out of Towson University.

Septimo, 27, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 26 (retroactive to March 22) with a left shoulder strain and assigned to Charlotte on a rehab assignment on April 26.  He appeared in two games with the Knights, allowing three runs in 0.1 IP.
