All Vegetarian menu at NYC elementary school

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A New York City elementary school has adopted an all-vegetarian menu.

Officials say P.S. 244 in Flushing, Queens is the first public school in New York City to go all-veggie. School officials believe it's also one of the first in the nation.

"I am proud of the students and staff for trailblazing this extraordinary path," Chancellor Dennis Walcott said. "Our school meals program has evolved under the Bloomberg Administration to offer dishes that meet our nutritional standards.

P.S. 244 opened in 2008 and houses just over 400 students in pre-kindergarten through third grade.

"We created PS 244 based on a principle of a healthy lifestyle and academic achievement," Principal Robert Groff, one of the school's founders, said.

The school started serving a vegetarian lunch three times a week and then increased it to four times a week.

It recently went all-vegetarian. The official announcement was made Tuesday.

The kids enjoyed black beans and cheddar quesadillas served with salsa and roasted potatoes.

The New York Coalition for Healthy School Food has partnered with PS244 and the Office of SchoolFood since 2009. At the time, the Coalition introduced its Cool School Food Program, which includes the development and introduction of plant-based entrée recipes.

In 2012, the partnership created a vegetarian lunch menu that is healthy, low in cholesterol and saturated fat, and high in fiber.

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.

Heading into the U.S. Open, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have won 36 of the past 38 Grand Slam titles, a stretch dating to the 2005 French Open. Nowadays, there seems to be a growing sense — or hope, maybe — among the best of the rest on the men's tennis tour that the quartet might be more vulnerable than ever.
