Man who accumulated 64 free meals at Paradise Bakery donates them

CHANDLER, Ariz. -

A retired Air Force Colonel acquired enough points from visiting Paradise Bakery to purchase more than 60 free meals. But it's what he did with all those free meals that has a lot of people talking.

Lt. Col. Gary Jones is a creature of habit -- visiting the restaurant everyday on his way to and from work.

He took all those points, cashed them out for bagged meals, and helped feed the homeless.

The Junior ROTC instructor tells his students at Chandler High School daily to do something good for others. He is a leading example of doing just that.

"I visit Paradise Bakery and Cafe at least twice a day, 5 days a week sometimes on Saturday and Sunday once a day," says Jones.

During his more than 1,200 visits over the past 5 to 6 years at the restaurant, he accumulated a pile of points -- enough for 64 free meals.

"I really didn't know I honestly didn't know what I was going to do with them."

Then it hit him. Working with Paradise Bakery and the Church Of The Nazarene, he cashed out all of his free meals, donating them to homeless individuals at Tempe Park.

"64 people who probably wouldn't have a meal otherwise did have a meal. Makes me feel good."

Lt, Col. Jones says he was once struggling, and now being able to pay it forward is the greatest reward imaginable.

"It's so worthwhile, it's a feel good thing and I don't want to make it sound like I'm selfish but we do have to look out for each other and do things for others that they can't do for themselves and I want to do all I can do."

Since donating all his points, he has already accumulated enough points for five more free meals. He says he isn't sure what he is going to do with it, but you can assure it will benefit someone else.
