Bobcat that attacked woman in Show Low had rabies

PHOENIX -

A young woman was attacked by a bobcat in the town of Show Low. The wild animal snuck up behind her and began clawing and biting her as she tried to fight it off.

The bobcat wasn't very big, but it packed a powerful bite.

"It was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life," says Katie Lusk.

Katie Lusk talked to us from Show Low via Skype. As she drove home Sunday night, she wasn't feeling well. So she pulled over and got out of her car.

The bobcat, which was alive when these photos were taken, was close by.

"I saw it in my headlights and I thought it was a domestic house cat. I didn't really think anything of it. Next thing I know I hear this really loud scream and it is on my leg," says Lusk.

Lusk sent us photos of injuries. You can see the puncture wounds on her leg.

"I was able to close its jaw down with my hands and I was able to body slam it on the ground and get away. I was surprised. I had a hard time getting a hold of it but when I did, I think it was my adrenaline, but they said the thing was only 12 pounds because it seemed a lot bigger than that."

She went to the hospital and got a rabies vaccine.

"Still doesn't feel real. I am still very sore. It is very scary. Whether they look small or not, they can cause some damage."

A Navajo County Sheriff's deputy ended up killing the bobcat with his car. It was brought to state lab in Phoenix where it tested positive for rabies.

Wildlife experts expected the rabies test to come back positive because it is so unusual for a bobcat to attack a person.

The last time a bobcat attacked and tested positive for rabies was back in 2009.
